Privacy & Cookie Policy

FilmIQ (filmiq.app, the "Site") is operated by Tom J Robb ("we", "us"). This policy explains what we collect when you play, why, who else is involved, and the choices you have. We aim to collect the minimum needed to run the games and comply with UK GDPR and the EU GDPR.

1. What we collect

  • Game progress on your device. Scores, streaks, settings and completed puzzles are stored in your browser's local storage so you can pick up where you left off. This never leaves your device unless you sign in.
  • Account data (only if you sign in). If you sign in with Google we receive your name, email address and profile picture from Google. If you create an email account we store your name, email address and a salted hash of your password. We use this to identify your saves and show your profile.
  • Cloud saves and statistics (only if you sign in). Your game statistics, achievements and play sessions are stored on Cloudflare's infrastructure so they sync across devices.
  • Anonymous play analytics. We record which games are played and how they end, tied to a random session identifier stored in your browser (not to your name or email unless you are signed in). This tells us which games and puzzles work.
  • Usage analytics. We use Google Analytics 4 with IP anonymisation to understand traffic: pages visited, approximate region, device and browser type.
  • Messages you send us. The contact form is processed by Formspree and delivers your name, email and message to us by email.

2. How we use it

  • To run the games, save your progress and show your stats and achievements.
  • To improve puzzles, fix bugs and decide what to build next.
  • To reply when you contact us.
  • To show advertising that keeps FilmIQ free (see section 4).

We do not sell your personal information. We do not send marketing email.

3. Cookies and local storage

FilmIQ itself uses browser local storage (not cookies) for your theme, settings, game progress and sign-in token. Third parties we use set cookies:

  • Google Analytics (_ga, _ga_*) to measure traffic.
  • Google AdSense may set advertising cookies to show and measure ads, including personalised ads where you have consented. Visitors in the UK, EU and other regions with consent laws are asked via Google's consent message before personalised advertising cookies are set.
  • Google Sign-In sets cookies needed to complete authentication if you use it.

You can clear or block storage and cookies in your browser settings. Blocking local storage will stop progress being saved. You can opt out of Google Analytics with the browser add-on and manage ad personalisation at Google Ads Settings.

4. Advertising

FilmIQ shows adverts from Google AdSense on some game pages to cover hosting and data costs. Google and its partners may use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads based on your visits to this and other sites. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services.

5. Third-party services

  • Cloudflare hosts the site and stores account data and cloud saves (Cloudflare Pages, Workers and D1). Privacy policy.
  • Google for sign-in, Analytics and AdSense. Privacy policy.
  • The Movie Database (TMDB) supplies film data and posters. Requests to TMDB are made from our servers; TMDB does not receive your personal data. This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB.
  • Formspree processes the contact form. Privacy policy.
  • Buy Me a Coffee processes optional donations on their own site.

6. How long we keep it

Local storage stays on your device until you clear it. Account data and cloud saves are kept while your account exists. Anonymous play analytics are kept for up to 26 months. Contact form emails are kept for as long as needed to deal with your message.

7. Your rights

If you are in the UK or EU you have the right to access, correct, export or delete your personal data, to object to or restrict processing, and to complain to a supervisory authority (in the UK, the ICO). To delete your FilmIQ account and all cloud data, email us from the address on your account and we will confirm within 30 days.

8. Children

FilmIQ is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. Some games display posters and synopses of films rated 15 or 18.

9. Security

All traffic is served over HTTPS. Passwords are stored as salted hashes and are never logged. No online service is completely secure; if you believe your account has been compromised, contact us straight away.

10. Changes

We will update this page when our practices change and update the date at the top. Significant changes will be flagged on the site.
